sony black ORBIS Devkits Roadmap/Types

Sony and Microsoft have had a lot of work with Orbis and Durango. Create a new hardware it’s a long running process, you have to build different versions of hardware and make changes along the core until the last version, the closer one to the retail product. We have created an article with three of these machines, take note about the Orbis evolution.

Currently, there are 3 types of devkits:

1) R10 boards with special BIOS, running in generic PC’s

2) “Initial 1″ — Early devkit

  • model number: DVKT-KS000K
  • SCE-provided PC equipped with R10XX board
  • Runs Orbis OS
  • Available July 2012

3) SoC Based Devkit: early version of the ORBIS hardware

  • Available January 2013

Time to look inside of each devkit:

R10 Board (with special BIOS) assemble in a Generic PC

  • Requires Windows 7 64 bit edition
  • Recommend
  • Sandy Bridge (Intel) or Bulldozer (AMD)
  • Minimum 8 GB RAM (system memory)
  • 650 Watt PSU
  • VS2010 SP1
  • DWM (Desktop Windows Manager) must be turned off
  • Application will use Windows services for everything except GPU interface
  • SCE will provide “Gnm”, a custom GPU interface

Do you remember the first Durango’s pictures? This is a very early devkit based on Windows.

DVKT-KS000K (“Initial 1″)

  • Runs Orbis OS
  • CPU: Bulldozer 8-core, 1.6 Ghz
  • Graphics Card: R10 with special BIOS
  • RAM: 8 GB (system memory)
  • BD Drive
  • HDD: 2.5 ” 160 GB
  • Network Controller
  • Custom South Bridge allows access to controller prototypes

devkits 600x375 ORBIS Devkits Roadmap/Types

DVKT-KS000K

SoC Based Devkit

  • Available January 2013
  • CPU: 8-core Jaguar
  • GPU: Liverpool GPU
  • RAM: unified 8 GB for devkit (4 GB for the retail console)
  • Subsystem: HDD, Network Controller, BD Drive, Bluetooth Controller, WLAN and HDMI (up to 1980×1080@3D)
  • Analog Outputs: Audio, Composite Video
  • Connection to Host: USB 3.0 (targeting over 200 MB/s),
  • ORBIS Dualshock
  • Dual Camera

The last devkit is the closer one to the retail console. Expect a machine with these specs or similar to these ones. Obviously, Sony could introduce changes in these features, but don’t expect deep mods.

What is mini DP in the block diagram?

      mini displayport.

  • gagdet

vgleaks = a load of shit, clickbait site.

    • LilWeezle

And what have you contributed to life? ……..

      Answer is: nothing.
      :)

      • gagdet

        teen fuck shut up.

    • sonny

Actually they’re pretty accurate on everything they publish. So they’re not a load of shit.

  • http://www.n4g.com Shay

    Wait a second..
Whats the clockspeed of the Jaguar CPUs at the final dev kit? It clocks 1.6ghz with batteries, seeming as thats a non issue here, would it have a turbo mode? does it auto overclock like AMDs other offering?
Is the Liverpool GPU based on the HD7970 GPU like rumored last year?
Is the rummor to it having 4GB GDDR5 ram true? Or is this DDR3/4?

  • http://www.n4g.com Shay

Without the above information.. its useless to reach any conclusion..
I actually think.. you guys may not have the info..
Wheres the talk of AMD APU now?
The Sony patent for APU–discrete GPU system and content switching?
Im calling these specs bs as it does not fit with very definite Orbis patents filed in 2011 and December 2012

  • JCanonn

I’am designer under NDA and I can not give much more data. actual devkit data is on Kotaku as called DVKT-KS000K, the version information in vgleaks “Soc based devkit” is false

current cpu on january devkit is monolitic 4 bulldozer modules gen3 (future steamroller) + custom gpu (r1xxx similar liverpool gpu on kaveri apu with more computer units)

  • antic604

If that’s the case, could you shed some light on final RAM setup, as Kotaku says devkit has 8Gb main ram + 2.2Gb video ram. Does it mean e.g 6Gb (4+2) in final console?

  • http://www.n4g.com Shay

APU+GPU= orbis. Would remain steamroller and not Jaguar to make sense of patents..
Msft wants to reserve two CPUs and 2 GB ram for OS.. Sony IS NOT doing this.
They are using integrated APU (GPU) possibly HD6770 for background tasks while discrete 7970 for use in games. The content switching patent says VGLeaks is LYING.

@JCanonn, is it GDDR5 in the Jan dev kit?

If the systems will include different OS styles (while Durango will have a heavy OS similar to W8, Orbis is suposed to include a ligh one like vita and ps3 did, wich is logical cause M$ is basically a soft developer company and Sony not), it doesn’t make any sense that they share the same CPU. I mean: same software (games and os) -> same hardware; different software (games or OS) -> different hardware. I find very hard to believe that both systems will include exactly the same CPU, it looks just fake. What’s more, the jaguar CPU is a terrible solution for gaming and actually a low end CPU. I definitely think that this specs are fake.

  • JCanonn

    @Shay
the devkit does not use a multi-GPU configuration, and if the graphics memory is separate from the main memory (main memory in the devkit is multi purpose, in the final system will be slightly lower)

I’m sorry I can not give more details of the end system console or devkit

  • Molk

    “8-core, 1.6 Ghz” – just like “xbox 720″? OMG!

  • DoctorFouad

Thanks for the info, it is logical that devkits change over time, hopefully the 4 Gb GDDR5 on PS4 is a 192 Gb/s fast one, if true then first party exclusive Ps4 titles would destroy anything PC could do on the first year lifetime of ps4, watch out for Killzone 4 launch title fall 2013 and uncharted 4 fall 2014. this E3 would make jaws drop.

  • DoctorFouad

also if the rumored compute unit module attached to help the CPU is true, this module could be dedicated to physics calculations, with another DSP for sound and another one for decoding audio/video, the 8 core jaguar would be sufficient.

  • http://www.n4g.com Shay

    @JCanonn, Thankyou sir for sharing.
I guess, stating if it is in fact GDDR5 and not DDR3/4 would break the NDA to an extent. Thanks for clarifying the issue of the CPU..
Like someone else mentioned up there, the 8 core Jaguar setup was used by msf to lock two cores and two gb of ram for the hefty Win8 OS. The Orbis OS is 512mb.. hard to believe it would be worth using the same CPU solution..
However.. Quadcore setup has been the general rumor over the last two years. 3GHZ per core, four cores

  • JCanonn

    @Shay
are 4 modules, but each module has 2FPU 1ALU, similar to current AMD modules for CPU/APU, but not necessarily in the case of an APU, or at least not in any of the APUs that AMD is planning to launch desktop and laptop PCs

I just wanted to clarify this point

    • JCanonn

      sorry typo… is 2ALU 1FPU

  • Locu

Can anyone tell me how is it possible to get 2.2 Gb of
Video Ram? ;) @JCanonn Do you mean with two FPUs one 256-Bit Flex
FPU where two 128-Bit FAMCs can act as one 256-Bit FAMC or do you
mean there are two Flex FPUs with 256-Bit? And with one ALU you
mean one Integer-Core per Module not two like now?

  • JCanonn

    @Locu
I said I would not give further technical information only clarify the misinformation

    @misterH
talking with de dev team chief about soc version, are not aware of the existence of SOC devkit version, after asking in scedev.net

Seems SOC based devkit is just made up.

Kotaku beat vgleak to posting the info so they added some extra fake kit.

  • Maynard

Yes, as fake as the rest of our articles :-D

    • Tiberius

I’m glad you guys are admitting that then.

“Vgleak exposed by commenter in post” – monday on IGN

  • Gamer85

Just a small update: GDDR5 bandwidth on Orbis has been reduced from 192GB/s to 176GB/s.

    • SuperSJ04

by who? insder wannabe in a forums?

      • Gamer85

Hahaha, my source is reliable. If you look at the new VGLeaks leak you’ll see the alleged bandwidth there is indeed 176GB/s. ;)

    • Informer3000

This is not true there is no proof that Sony reduce the Bandwidth to 176gbyte/s. The
Info was spread on Neogaf Forum but is false the source is not legit. It is disinformation against Sony to put down Ps4 capabilities , coming from Microsoft employes.

  • Gamer85

Hmm, I don’t know how exactly 176GB/s would be bad for Orbis, after all RAM bandwidth on Durango is 68GB/s. But if you think it’s fake, there’s no problem, we’ll see very soon I guess. But I trust my sources.
